In The Blind Banker, the whole ‘date’ thing always amused me. I know most people take it as an example of Sherlock’s social naivete, but I think he does know what a date actually is. John explained a date as ‘When two people who like each other go out and have fun’ and when he says that a date was not what Sherlock was actually suggesting, Sherlock said ‘Where are you taking her?’
Sherlock knows that John has at least one other acquaintance in London: Stamford. And if he thinks that a date is not necessarily romantic, why would he automatically ask where John was taking her and not them or him or her?
Clearly he actually knows what a date is, and was really asking John out on one.
Also, he admits to liking John which is enough of a killer in itself.

John: So you got it wrong.
Sherlock: No.
John: You were wrong. It wasn’t in the sugar. You got it wrong.
Sherlock: A bit. Won’t happen again.Aww Sherlock, admitting you are a bit wrong. Only for you, John.
